This conference provided the occasion for an examination of the current challenges facing the leaders of historic communities in Europe, for example achieving a balance between conservation and the requirements of contemporary society. Particular emphasis was laid on the role of national associations of historic towns, in order to pave the way for the establishment of a new European Association of Historic Towns.
