The European Social Charter, reflects two trends, both opposing and complementary, which are evident in the situation of women in the working world : the need to ensure special protection for women
and the principle of equality between women and men which is now of foremost importance. This study traces the methods used to reconcile these two conflicting demands and to follow the changes in European society.
