Fast change in European societies, whether in political, economic or cultural terms, makes it necessary to transform education systems so as to answer both the needs of those societies and the expectations of their individual members. This transformation process causes teachers to assume new roles and pupils to learn in new ways. The depth and diversity of analysis in the contributions to this joint publication, concerned with the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on teaching and learning practices in our modern-day societies, show the complexity of the issues at stake, and also the essential need to ensure consistency between the various components of education systems in Europe. The Council of Europe has devoted a specific project, entitled "Learning and teaching in the communication society", to the impact of ICTs on education systems in Europe. This publication is one of the project's main results, through which the Organisation hopes to contribute to the development of European education systems.
